Attic jobs in July, heat safety and scheduling that keeps crews upright

It is mid-July, and the attic jobs did not stop coming just because the weather did. On a 90-degree afternoon, the air under a dark shingle roof can run past 130 degrees, and the sheathing itself hotter than that. Now put your sprayer up there in a full suit, gloves, a hood, and respiratory protection, dragging hose, working a gun overhead. That is one of the most heat-stressed positions in the trades, and it deserves to be planned like the hazard it is.

The part that catches crews off guard is that heat illness does not announce itself politely. A guy who felt fine at the top of the ladder can be in real trouble twenty minutes later, and by the time he knows it himself, his judgment is already degraded. That is why heat safety cannot run on "speak up if you feel bad." It has to run on schedule, rotation, and a foreman who is watching.

None of this is a reason to park the rig until September. It is a reason to run July differently than April.

Exhaustion versus stroke, and why the difference matters

Two conditions, one line between them, and the line is the difference between a bad afternoon and an ambulance.

Heat exhaustion looks like this:

  • Heavy sweating, pale or clammy skin
  • Weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea
  • Cramps, and a fast but weak pulse

The response is simple: out of the attic, into shade or AC, suit open or off, water, and rest. A worker with heat exhaustion does not go back up that day. Not after lunch, not "once he cools off." His body has already lost the fight once.

Heat stroke is the emergency:

  • Confusion, slurred speech, stumbling, or strange behavior
  • Hot skin that may be dry because sweating has shut down
  • Collapse or loss of consciousness

Heat stroke kills. If you see confusion or a worker goes down, call 911 first, then cool him aggressively while you wait: shade, suit off, cold water and wet cloth on as much skin as you can, ice packs at the neck, armpits, and groin if you have them. Do not drive him to the hospital yourself and do not wait to see if he comes around. The confusion is the tell. A dizzy guy who can talk to you straight is likely exhaustion. A guy who does not make sense is an emergency.

Train the whole crew on both lists, because the person having heat stroke is the last one who will recognize it.

The PPE trap

Here is the ugly bind of summer foam work. Everything OSHA and the SDS require of you in that attic, the suit, gloves, hood, and supplied air or a full-face respirator against MDI, also blocks the main way your body sheds heat. Sweat that cannot evaporate does not cool you. A sprayer in full PPE is working in his own private sauna, and the answer is never to shed the PPE. Isocyanate exposure is not the corner to cut, and MDI gives you poor odor warning, so you will not smell your mistake.

Since you cannot lighten the gear, you attack everything around it:

  • Start early. On the roof by 6, spraying by 7, out of the attic by late morning. The attic peaks with the afternoon sun, so the same job sprayed at 8 a.m. instead of 2 p.m. can be a difference of 30 or 40 degrees.
  • Purge the attic before anyone climbs in. Set a powered fan moving serious air through the space for a while before entry and keep air exchanging while you work. You are also managing spray exhaust, so plan airflow for both jobs at once.
  • Rotate short. Cut attic stints well below what the same sprayer does in February, and rotate two people through the hot seat instead of letting one tough it out. Pride is not a cooling strategy.
  • Put hydration on the clock. Thirst lags dehydration badly in heat, so do not wait for it. Small amounts of water every 15 to 20 minutes, enforced by the foreman, with electrolytes across a long day. If someone has not needed a bathroom break all day, he is behind.
  • Give new guys time. Bodies acclimatize to heat over days of exposure. A new hire or anyone back from a week off should get lighter heat duty his first week back, per OSHA's guidance on acclimatization.

One genuine bright spot: supplied-air respirators earn their keep in July. A hood fed with airline air is getting a constant flow of breathable air across the face instead of pulling hot attic air through a cartridge, and most sprayers find it noticeably more tolerable in the heat. If you have been on the fence about running supplied air, summer attics are the argument.

Schedule the attic like the weather report is a spec sheet

Treat the forecast the way you treat substrate temps: a number that dictates the plan.

  1. Attics spray first. Walls, rim joists, and shaded work fill the afternoon.
  2. Check tomorrow's high the night before. On the brutal days, consider a first-light start or moving the attic to another day entirely.
  3. Know when to call it. If rotations are shortening, guys are quiet and gray, and the water is not keeping up, the day is over. We would rather you eat a remobilization than run an attic crew past its edge. No job is worth a heat stroke.

Your rig is baking too

The crew is not the only thing suffering in the sun. Chemical wants to live at roughly 60 to 80 degrees, and a dark drum sitting in direct July sun, or in a closed box truck all afternoon, can blow well past that. Hot chemical changes reaction behavior and viscosity, and your proportioner's heaters cannot cool anything down. Park the rig in shade where you can, keep drums out of direct sun, watch your material temps before you spray, and follow the TDS storage range. Order what you will use and store the rest somewhere conditioned.
