Summer spraying, heat, humidity, and the wet substrates hiding in plain sight

Everyone talks about winter spraying like it is the hard season. Cold substrates, frozen B-side, heated hose all the way out. Fair enough — but June brings its own set of ways to ruin a set of foam, and they are sneakier because the weather feels like your friend. The rig fires up easy, the drums are warm, the crew is in T-shirts. Then you pull off a roof deck a week later and find blisters, or the foam looks like dish sponge instead of bread.
Heat and humidity change the chemistry on you. The reaction that behaves itself at 70 degrees runs hot and fast at 95, and the moisture riding in summer air and soaked into summer framing is an uninvited third component in your mix. Neither shows up on the gun. Both show up in the foam.
Hot substrates speed everything up
SPF chemistry is exothermic and temperature-sensitive. Spray onto a hot substrate — a roof deck in the afternoon sun, the underside of dark shingles, a metal building skin — and the reaction kicks faster. Faster is not better:
- Poor flow and knit. Foam that gels almost instantly does not flow into gaps and corners or wet out the substrate. You get pinholes, voids at framing intersections, and weaker adhesion because the foam skinned before it could bite.
- Rougher surface. Fast-rising foam tends toward a coarser, bumpier finish, which matters when a coating or drywall is going over it.
- Heat stacking in thick lifts. Closed-cell already generates serious internal heat. Most TDS sheets cap passes at around 2 inches per lift for exactly this reason. On a hot day, the substrate is not pulling heat out of the foam the way a cool one does, so the core of a thick lift runs hotter. Push lifts too thick in this weather and you invite scorching in the core — discolored, degraded, foul-smelling foam — and in the worst case a genuine fire risk. Respect the lift limits and give passes time to cool before recoating. When in doubt, thinner lifts and longer waits.
Check the TDS for the substrate temperature window. There is a maximum, not just a minimum, and summer roof decks can blow past it by early afternoon.
Humidity and moisture: the froth problem
Water reacts with the A-side isocyanate. That is not a side note — it is the whole mechanism behind water-blown open-cell foam. So when unplanned water joins the party, it blows foam you did not design:
- Humid air and damp surfaces push the reaction toward CO2-blown froth: large, irregular cells, lower density where it counts, crumbly texture, poor cell structure.
- Moisture at the bond line attacks adhesion. Foam sprayed onto a damp substrate can look fine on day one and peel or delaminate later, because the layer that touched the water is the weakest layer in the system.
- Closed-cell is fussier about this than open-cell, but neither wants a wet substrate.
The rule is simple and old: substrates need to be dry and within the TDS temperature range. Summer just makes "dry" harder to judge by eye.
Green lumber and green concrete lie to you
New construction in June is full of material that looks dry and is not:
- Framing lumber that got rained on last week, or came off the truck at high moisture content, reads dry to the palm on a sunny morning. Use a moisture meter. Many contractors want framing at or below roughly 18 to 19 percent moisture content before spraying — check what your foam's TDS says and measure, do not guess. Probe the wood that dries slowest: bottom plates, doubled studs, anything shaded.
- Fresh concrete and new slabs keep releasing moisture for weeks or months. A quick field check is taping a square of poly sheet to the slab and coming back the next day — condensation or a dark spot under the plastic means it is still wet. Rim joists over damp new basements deserve the same suspicion.
If the meter says wet, the schedule says wait. Spraying over green lumber buys you adhesion callbacks and trapped moisture against the framing.
Attics in June are a different planet
An attic that was pleasant at 8 a.m. can pass 130 degrees by mid-afternoon. Two problems: the substrate blows past the TDS window, and your crew cooks. Heat stress in a full suit and respirator is no joke — remember you are already managing MDI exposure with supplied air or a full-face APR per the SDS, and dehydration makes people sloppy with the PPE that keeps them safe. Rotate sprayers, push fluids, and get out before the deck peaks.
Your trailer is an oven
Drum and set temperature matters in summer too, just in the opposite direction from January. A closed trailer parked in the sun goes way past the roughly 60 to 80 degree storage range the chemical wants. Hot B-side changes viscosity and can shift your ratio; chronically hot storage shortens shelf life. Park in shade where you can, crack the trailer for airflow, keep drums off the sun-facing wall, and check component temperatures at the proportioner instead of assuming. You conditioned drums up in winter; in summer the job is keeping them from running away hot.
Schedule like a farmer
The cheapest fix for all of the above is the clock:
- Spray roof decks and attics first thing in the morning, when substrates are coolest.
- Save shaded interior work — basements, crawl spaces, north walls — for afternoons.
- Watch dew point on early starts: a substrate that cooled overnight below the morning dew point will carry condensation you cannot see. Let the sun burn it off, verify with the meter, then spray.
- Build the wait into the bid. A morning-only spray window on a big roof means more site days. Price it; do not eat it.
Summer foam problems are almost all preventable with a meter, a thermometer, and a schedule that respects both. The chemistry does not care that the weather is nice.
