Winter drum storage, keeping the B-side alive through the freeze

The first freezing nights are showing up across upstate New York, and anything stored in an unheated garage, trailer, or barn has already spent nights below 40 degrees. The real cold is close behind. If there are foam sets sitting out there right now, this post is urgent.

Every winter we take calls from contractors with a B-side drum that will not spray right — foam that looks wrong, off-ratio alarms, a resin that seems separated or gritty. And every winter, some of those drums trace back to one cold night in November that nobody thought would matter. It did. A frozen B-side is not a warm-it-up-and-carry-on problem. It is usually a dead drum.

Here is what the cold actually does to your material, and the storage and conditioning routine that keeps sets alive from now through March.

Why freezing ruins the B-side

The B-side resin is a blended product: polyols, catalysts, flame retardants, surfactants, and the blowing agent (water in open-cell, an HFO or similar blend in closed-cell), all held in a stable mixture by careful formulation. Cold attacks that stability.

  • Components can separate or stratify as the blend chills, and some of that separation does not fully reverse with warming and mixing. Once certain ingredients drop out or crystallize, the drum may never spray on-ratio again.
  • In closed-cell resin, the blowing agent can come out of solution when the material gets too cold and then warms unevenly. Foam sprayed from that drum can run off-density, with bad cell structure and poor yield.
  • Even short of a hard freeze, cold resin thickens dramatically. Viscosity that is way off between the A-side and B-side is a classic driver of off-ratio foam, crossover, and adhesion problems.

The A-side has its own cold-weather issue — MDI can start to crystallize when stored too cold — but the B-side is the fragile one, and it is the one a freeze kills outright. When in doubt about a drum that got cold, call the manufacturer with the lot number before you spray it into someone's house. A drum is cheap compared to ripping out bad foam.

The storage target: 60 to 80 degrees, all the time

The rule is simple. Keep every set at roughly 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit from the day it arrives to the day it goes through the proportioner. Check your specific product's TDS — some list their own storage band — but 60 to 80 is the safe zone for nearly everything we stock.

That means, practically:

  • A heated storage space, even a small one. A corner of the shop with a reliable heater and a cheap thermometer beats a big unheated warehouse every time. Track the overnight low, not the afternoon reading.
  • Drums off the concrete. A cold slab pulls heat out of the bottom of a drum all night. Pallets or dunnage under every drum.
  • Drum heater bands for material staged on the rig or in the trailer. Get thermostat-controlled bands, set them inside the storage range, and give them time — a band warms the shell fast and the core slowly. A 55-gallon drum of cold resin can take a day or more to come up evenly.
  • An insulated heated box or hot box if you stage multiple sets in a trailer. Some crews build a simple insulated enclosure with a small thermostat-controlled heater; it holds four drums at temperature for a fraction of what one dead drum costs.

And one absolute rule, no exceptions:

Never put open flame on a drum. No torches, no salamanders pointed at drums, no burn barrels nearby. The A-side is hazardous material, a sealed drum builds pressure when heated and is not built to hold it, and localized overheating can wreck the resin even when it does not cause something worse.

Conditioning before you spray

Storage temperature and spray-day readiness are two different things. A drum that lived at 65 degrees all week still needs attention the morning of the job.

  1. Check actual material temperature, not air temperature. A probe or infrared reading on the drum shell tells you more than the thermostat on the wall.
  2. Recirculate the B-side before spraying. Running the material through the proportioner's recirculation loop evens out the temperature and re-blends anything that settled. Many manufacturers also recommend agitating or rolling B-side drums that have sat, especially closed-cell winter formulations — the TDS will say.
  3. Let the machine heaters do finish work, not rescue work. Primary heaters are designed to lift material a limited number of degrees at flow. Feeding them 45-degree resin and expecting 120 at the gun is how you get cold foam at the substrate and a heater working past its design all day.
  4. Keep drums warm during the spray day. The rig enclosure or hot box matters at 10 a.m., not just overnight. A drum standing open to a 25-degree trailer loses temperature faster than the transfer pump pulls it down.

Winter formulations exist for a reason — if you are spraying through January, ask about them. But no winter blend forgives frozen storage.

Buying cadence: smaller and steadier beats stockpiling

Summer habits say buy deep when the price is right. Winter says the opposite. Every set sitting in your possession from November through March is a set you have to keep warm 24 hours a day, through power outages, dead trailer heaters, and the weekend nobody checked the shop.

The lower-risk pattern is to buy closer to the work: enough material for the booked jobs plus a small cushion, delivered the week you need it. Your heated square footage is the real limit on how much material you should own in winter — buy to that limit, not to the deal.

Freight matters too. A set that rides an unheated LTL trailer across the state in January can arrive as damaged as one that froze in your barn, and you will not know until it sprays wrong.
